Drinking Water

For well over 100 years, ozone has been known as the fastest, strongest and most natural disinfectant available for water purification. It’s 3125 times faster and 50% stronger than chlorine and breaks down to oxygen while preserving healthy water minerals with no consumables!

Drinking water, like every other substance, contains small amounts of bacteria. Most of these bacteria are common ones and they are generally not harmful. Chlorine is usually added to drinking water to prevent bacterial growth while the water streams through pipelines. This is why drinking water also contains minimal amounts of chlorine. Trihalomethanes are formed as a by-product when chlorine is used to disinfect water for drinking. Ozone is a more effective disinfectant than chlorine, chloramines, and even chlorine dioxide. Several studies proved that ozone, unlike chlorine products, can deactivate resistant micro-organisms.

Ozone has excellent disinfection and oxidation qualities and is widely used for drinking water treatment. Ozone can be added at several points throughout the treatment system, such as during pre-oxidation, intermediate oxidation or final disinfection. Ozone is recommended for pre-oxidation, before filtration so that flocculation and precipitation can occur allowing for more effective filtration. After ozonation these filters can remove the remaining organic matter.

This combination has several benefits:

  • Removal of organic and inorganic matter.
  • Removal of micro-pollutants, such as pesticides.
  • Enhancement of the flocculation/coagulation-decantation process.
  • Enhanced disinfection and reduction of disinfection by-products.
  • Odour and taste elimination.

All water sources contain natural organic matter (NOM). NOM creates direct problems, such as odour and taste in water, but also indirect problems such as organic disinfection by-product formation and support of bacterial growth in the distribution system. To produce pure drinking water, the removal of NOM is a priority in modern water treatment.

Most inorganic matter can be eliminated by ozone quite quickly. After ozonation, bio filtration is also required for inorganic matter where oxidation forms insoluble compounds that need to be removed during the next water purification step.

Due to alarming articles in the news, many people worry about getting sick from tap water. For instance, articles about Legionella outbreaks will lead to a spike in bottled water sales. Consumers may either drink bottled water or install expensive water purification systems as a result of this. Studies have indicated that many of these consumers are being ripped off due to the expenses of bottled water and in some cases they may end up drinking water that is dirtier then they can get from their taps.

Ozone not only kills bacteria and viruses; it also improves taste and odour properties and breaks down micro pollutants.
